Aug & Sep 2009 : Save Mart Employee Wins $500 Shopping Sprees for Great Service Aug 31, 2009 Save Mart Supermarkets awarded its 150 top service-providing employees with shopping sprees in each of their stores. The employees, who have delivered top-rated customer service to Mystery shoppers who rate their quality of service provided at the company’s Save Mart, Los Banos location. Their names get sent to the Regional Office where their names gets chosen randomly. Rick Silva, the winner of this years $500 shopping spree says he was nervous, but excited. Asthma Coalition : The Merced/Mariposa County Asthma Coalition is a community-based health organization open to anyone interested in asthma and air quality issues. The coalition meets the third Tuesday of every month at Golden Valley Health Centers classroom, at noon. We invite you to come and join us. Program Manager Mary-Michal Rawling, Program Associate Melissa Kelly-Ortega. Health care providers can access the updated Asthma Guidelines at www.nhlbi.nih.gov. ASTHMA, AN INFLAMMATORY LUNG DISEASE, is one of the most common chronic diseases of children. Environmental Triggers of Asthma: Outdoor Air pollution, is the number one environmental concern for the people of the Valley, which has some of the most polluted air in the country. Sources of Pollution: There is wide array of pollution sources in Merced County. The top three sources of PM 2.5 in Merced County in 2005 were heavy duty diesel trucks (14.8%), fugitive windblown dust from agricultural land and unpaved roads (13.2%), and farming operations including dust (11.8%). A Big Problem for Merced County All of this pollution leads to the violation of health based National and State Ambient Air Quality Standards in Merced County and the San Joaquin Valley Air Basin. For Example, from 2000-2005 Merced County violated the State 8-hour ozone standard on 525 days and the National *-hour ozone standard on 194 days! Because of this: Merced County was ranked 8th in the national list of "People at Risk in 25 Most Ozone-Polluted Counties. The city of Merced ranked 6th in the national list of "People at Risk in 25 Most Ozone-Polluted Cities" Of the top 6 most ozone-polluted cities in the nation , four (Bakersfield, Visalia-Porterville, Fresno-Madera , and Merced) are located in the San Joaquin Valley. Chamber of Commerce July, 2008 Mixer : My name is Anabel Coleman and I was born in Honduras, Central America. I have been living in the USA since 1988. I am married to Jon Coleman and have two daughters, Monica 17 and Taylor-Rain 10. We have been living in Los Banos since 2002. We bought our house here two days before 9/11/01. I went to school in Long Beach, LBCC. After six years there it was time for change, so we moved to Watsonville where I lived for another six years . My husband and I decided to buy a house and we couldn’t afford a house there and that’s how we found Los Banos. The first time we came to Los Banos The weather was hot the temperature was 115f. I didn’t think we would come back! We thought we should keep looking. However we returned three more times before we bought our house. I started my own business three years ago, after being unable to get a job at Wal-Mart, or Kmart. When I met one of my daughters new friends mom, she came to visit me and was looking at my family photos and ask me to take pictures at her daughters baptism. I did, and she paid me. I thought “ I can get money for this?” So my new business was born. AC Digital Photography. I later joined the Internet and www.picturesarefun.com became my footprint on the web. I started to upload my Photos right away and now I have more then 60,000 photos in my page. Web traffic started with 2 pictures viewed at day. Now more then 1000 pictures are viewed a day, over 50,000 clicks a month. I hope to grow my business nation wide, perhaps even Franchise.

Missoula Children's Theater : Missoula Children’s Theater “Rumpelstiltskin” The Missoula Children’s Theater auditions where held on Aug 4th at the Ted Falasco Arts Center. Despite Mary Harris’s efforts to spread the word around the schools in session the children turn out was unusually low. The play needs about 50 to 60 children from 1st grade to 12th grade, 51 came to the audition which meant everyone gets a part on the play, everyone was very happy. The cast had five days to memorize, practice and put together the play “Rumpelstiltskin” The end result was as always Fantastic!. The Arts Council has been bringing Missoula Children’s Theater(MCT) to Los Banos since the year 2000. the first time 37 children audition and the number have been increasing to as many as 150 last winter. Children have had the opportunity to act and develop confidence through this program. Scholar ships are awarded to those who excel and wish to go to summer camp in Missoula Montana. So far no body has apply for the scholar ships. Alex Nunley and Brance Sousa have been to Missoula summer camp a couple times and this summer they are in Missoula working for MCT. I will have a full report when they come back. Even though there were enough kids for the play we would like to see more children participate. It is free to audition and free to be in the play you do not have to buy costomes or pay for classes you do have to buy tickets to see the play. We also offer three free workshops for teachers and students during the week that MCT directors are in town. Mary Harris tried to inform the schools as usual, but somehow the word did not spread through the schools. She asked the parents who called how they heard about the audition and most reply “the newspaper”. None of the schools showed interest in the workshops and there were no requests from any teachers either. This was very disappointing to Mary she hopes to get more people interested next time. The shows were at 3-7pm on Sat, Aug 9th. We were amazed to see how many people came out to see it. The Arts Center was packed for both shows, after the show the older kids and some wonderful parents stayed to help Mary and MCT Tour Actor/Director: Annie Fletcher and Dani Hollen to take down the set, and clean up. Afterwards they went to Mountain Mikes for some well deserved pizza. The Missoula Children’s Theater will be back next year with their version of “The Princess and the Pea” The Auditions will be on February 9th, 2009 at 3:30 at The Ted Falasco Arts Center an the show will be on Saturday, February 14th 2009 you may call Mary Harris for more information 826-9095.
